These are various parts for tape recorders for Vanguard I, Explorers I, II, and III. The Varo tuning fork provided an accurate time base. These are all test and engineering samples used to work out the engineering and mechanical design of the tape recorder. These are components from a payload inventory originally intended for the University of Iowa package to be flown on Vanguard and the early Explorer satellites. They include components in George Ludwig's possession since they were built in the late 1950s. Donated by Dr. George Ludwig in 2006.
