Each Apollo spacecraft was equipped with a set of two survival rucksacks. The contents were to be used in the event of an emergency landing in remote areas of the world.

This aluminum, wedge-shaped water container was one of three containers in the survival rucksack #1 flown on the Apollo 15 mission in July/August 1971. The other two containers are rectangular in shape. Each container holds up to 4.5 pounds of deionized water and has a metal screw cap for access.

This water container was transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian in 1978.
