This spare seat back cover for Space Shuttle crew seats was made for use in a crew training simulator or a flight vehicle. The cover also includes a cover for the padded headrest. Astronauts found that such covers made the high-backed metal seats more comfortable. A notation LWS on the item indicates that this cover was designed for the Light Weight Seats that replaced the heavier original seats.
The museum acquired two bare Shuttle crew seats from NASA in 2002, and later acquired some seat covers to permit a more realistic display.
