Senator Jake Garn (R., Utah) wore this flight suit on the STS 51-D Space Shuttle mission aboard Discovery in April 1985. At the time, he was a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and chairman of the subcommittee with authority over NASA's budget. Formerly a pilot in the U.S. Navy and Air National Guard, Garn flew on the Shuttle as a payload specialist assisting the astronaut crew with various tasks and experiments. Senator Garn was the first member of Congress to fly in space. NASA transferred a variety of his flight clothing and equipment to the Museum soon after the mission.
