This extended seat cushion came into use after 1986, when Space Shuttle crews began to wear the orange launch-entry pressure suits. The attached parachute backpack forced the astronaut to sit more forward on the seat, so this extended seat cushion gave better support and comfort. It fit into place on the original commander-pilot seats in the Space Shuttle flight deck, or cockpit. NASA gave the Museum two original commander-pilot seats, but without the padded cushions. Fortunately, the California Science Center had a set and generously donated it to the Museum.
