Date 1784 Type ART-Prints, Original Medium Print, Etching on Paper, Colored Physical Description Colored etching of a balloon aloft over a crowd in an open space. Shows the launch of the balloon Le Suffren, from the orphnage at Nantes, June 14, 1784. The balloon was constructed by M. Levesque and flown by Coustard de Massi, Chevalier de St. Louis, and R.P. Mouchet. Constructed of oiled silk, it was 30'4" in diameter. The pair ran short of ballast and suffered a rough landing, bouncing across the ground until they were finally able to leap safely to earth at Gest, nine leagues from Nantes. The balloon was found at Poitou, 22 leagues from the take-off point. Title and description in French at the bottom. "Cette Estampe se Vend a Nantes chez le St. Sebire Quay Brancafse qui afsorti en Estampes Papier peint er autres, Et a Paris chez Chereau rue St. Jacques au defous de la Fontaine St. Severin aux 2 Colones N. 257."
