The Donald D. Engen Aero Club Trophy for Aviation Excellence is comprised of a circular bass wood base with pyrex glass dome. The blown pyrex DaVinci Prone Ornithopter Flying Machine, Wright 1903 Flyer, and Hypersonic Aircraft inside of the dome. Round black annodized aluminum plaques with gold etched images of the DaVinci Prone Ornithopter Flying Machine, Wright 1903 Flyer and Hypersonic Aircraft are depicted around the top of the base, each with a year and recipient name. Around the base reads black anodized aluminum bands, gold etched "Aero Club Trophy for Aviation Excellence". Center back has a black sliding on/off switch. There is a battery compartment for 4 AA batteries on the underside of the wood disc at the 2001 medallion. A wiring channel is routed into the underside of this disc. The underside of the disc is covered with felt, hiding the wiring and the lightbulb.
The lower octagonal wood base detaches from the round wood base. The octagonal base has two brass plaques on each face.
