NASA had this lens test drive box available during ground preparations of the IMAX camera used in the payload bay of the space shuttle. The camera was flown on seven missions in the 1980s and 1990s and captured film footage for four IMAX productions.

As motorized lens were controlled remotely during flight, the motors underwent ground testing to ensure they were ready for flight. This piece of ground support equipment was used to test 30mm camera lenses.
