Collection Item Summary:
This mockup Module Servicing Tool drive shaft extension with socket head substitutes for the original part that was lost or repurposed by NASA. When connected to the battery-powered handheld control unit, the extension could reach and loosen or tighten recessed bolts that attached systems modules to the Multimission Modular Spacecraft. Space shuttle astronauts used the tool on the 1984 Solar Max repair mission (STS 41-C) to revive a solar observatory satellite that had prematurely ceased to operate. NASA provided this replacement part in 2015 to complete the Module Servicing Tool control unit previously given to the Museum.
