This is part of the exterior of the cabin of a Gemini capsule. Shingles made from Rene 41 are attached to the outer aluminum surface. These shingles protected the capsule from the tremendous heat generated during reentry.
McDonnel Aircraft made the capsules and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration transferred this artifact to NASM in 1972.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
