This is one of two optical devices installed on an Apollo Command Module that assisted the astronauts in navigating from Earth to the Moon. It allowed the astronauts to take fixes on stars, which were combined with other data in the Module's guidance computer to give them accurate position and velocity.
This device, made by the Kollsman Instrument Company, was flown on Apollo 16, a lunar mission that flew in April 1972.
Transferred from NASA to the Museum in 1977.
This object is on display in Human Spaceflight at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.
