This faceplate covered the control panel of the Thermal Enclosure System-Crystal Observation System (TES-COS), protein crystal growth equipment, on the Space Shuttle. Its smooth surface protected the dials and switches on the control panel from unintended handling when not in use.
The technical team who developed this equipment gave it to the Museum in 2012 when they began using new, more advanced equipment.
