On February 17, 1986, pilot Bob Harris set a world altitude record of 49,009 feet in a single-seat Grob 102 Standard Astir III sailplane over the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. The Grob 102, depicted in this painting, is on display at the Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
