Physical Description Colored etching of Chas Paternoster's first unaccompanied ascent in his balloon The Sultan, from Vauxhall Gardens, London. The ascent took place on August 7, 1854 for the Annual Fete of the Licensed Victuallers' School. The image shows the balloon not far above the ground with Chas Paternoster waving to the crowd below from the gondola. Three stanza poem below caption: 'An Appeal From the Balloon, to the Friends of the Licensed Victuallers' School.' 'Drawn and Engraved by W. Longman 35, Red Cross St. City.' Dimensions 2-D - Unframed (H x W): 40.3 × 29.8cm (15 7/8 × 11 3/4 in.)
