This flag of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum flew aboard two Space Shuttle missions, STS 41-D (1984) and STS-110 (2002). The gold sunburst in the center is the Smithsonian symbol, and the Museum's logo in the white field symbolizes aviation and spaceflight. On each mission, NASA packs some flags or mementos for other organizations, giving them special value as items "flown in space." Likewise, each astronaut is permitted to fly a few personal mementos for that reason. A package of these flags was flown on the 1984 mission. Then astronaut Jerry Ross took two of them into space again on his last flight, a mission to the International Space Station, in the Museum's honor.
