Twenty lithium hydroxide canisters were provided on the Apollo 11 command module for sequential insertion into the Environmental Control System (ECS) apparatus. The canisters were designed to maintain a pure-oxygen environment within the Apollo spacecraft by filtering out carbon dioxide, odors, and debris. During the processes of installation and removal into the ECS a rubber shim was attached to the canister. This unused shim was returned and transferred to the Smithsonian in 1970.
