In the event Apollo crews did not use the window shades to black out the light, glare shades were used to shade selected vital displays on the Main Display Console. The glare shades have a molded fiberglass base with sponge rubber panel sides. A Velcro hook is bonded on the base flanges as a method of restraint.
This glare shield, labeled MISSION TIMER, was placed over the timer installed on panel 2 of the Apollo 11 command module's Main Display Console during the first lunar landing mission in July 1969. NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in 1971.
