This is an original F-1 rocket engine handler used to move the engine in a horizontal position within assembly buildings, repair shops, or hangars. If the engine was to be transported over a considerable distance, the handler had to be transported by another vehicle.
This handler came with the full F-1 engine on exhibit in "Destination Moon" at the National Air and Space Museum in downtown Washington, DC. The F-1 on display at the downtown location is the earliest F-1 engine in the NASM collections and was donated in 1970, when the F-1 was still operational in the Apollo program.
NASA transferred this handler and the rocket engine to the Museum in 1969.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
