This flying helmet was worn by Brigadier General William L. "Billy" Mitchell during World War I. The shearling lining along the inside of the helmet helped keep aviators warm when exposed to cold temperatures at higher alititudes.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
