The Type H-1 flying helmet is significan because it was the first type of hard helmet issued to United States Navy jet pilots as standard equipment. The helmet was designed to accommodate the issue Polaroid goggles. Earphones were built into the chamois covered rubber padding. The boom microphone was used during flights under 10,000 feet when the Type A-13A oxygen mask with built-in microphone was not required.
