Print, Engraving on Paper, Uncolored
Uncolored engraving of a portrait of the Duke de Chartres. Shows the Duke from the chest upwards, surrounded by an elaborate frame.
The Duke de Chartres led the party chasing the first manned hydrogen balloon flown by Charles and Robert, and was reputed to be the first to reach the landing site. He became a balloon enthusiast. Benjamin Franklin was invited to visit a friend’s home for “tea and balloons,” and attended a fête at which the duke distributed “little phaloid balloonlets” to his guests.
