In the hopes of improving service on the Amsterdam-Batavia route, KLM commissioned Fokker to design an update for the Fokker F-XVIII. By the time the airplane was delivered to KLM in 1935, the advent of the Douglas DC-2 had eclipsed the airplane. Only one Fokker F-XXXVI was produced.
