Collection Item Summary:

This mounted vanity license plate, reading "1-LST" for "Large Space Telescope," was given to F. Peter Simmons, an aerospace engineer who was instrumental in planning that instrument, which eventually evolved into the Hubble Space Telescope. Simmons, an engineer who studied at the George Washington University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked as the Director of Space Science Programs at Martin Marietta Aerospace and later as Director of Space Astronomy at Grumman Aerospace Corporation.

Simmons gave the license plate to the Museum when he donated his papers to the Museum's Archives in 2005.
