As with filming for any motion picture, IMAX movies filmed in space required proper lighting for each scene. Astronauts had this lamp available for placement around the shuttle cabin to illuminate their activities beyond standard interior lighting. It has a long cable for attachment to a power source and a mounting surface for placement on brackets so it would not float freely. The metal cage around the light protected astronauts from the hot lamp while it was in use.

NASA transferred this and other IMAX camera equipment to the Smithsonian in 2012.
