This Lunar Module test article combines the Ascent Stage of LTA-1 (LM Test Article-1) with the Descent Stage of LTA-11. The LTAs that formed the backbone of the Grumman Aircraft ground test program for Apollo. LTA-1 and LTA-11 were "house" spacecraft, used to iron out problems during fabrication, assembly, and checkout. Neither stage in the current combination LTA-1A/11D was ever completed lacking skin, landing gear legs, and engines; a mockup descent engine is installed. This LM was transferred to Smithsonian ownership in 1974.
