Decorative ropework is a traditional navy pastime, persisting from the age of sail when sailors would make objects like this in their free time from trimmings and worn-out rope available aboard ship. Artistic items like this remain part of the ceremonial quarterdeck (boarding area) decor on modern vessels. These three pieces were made specifically for the National Air and Space Museum to decorate the "quarterdeck" entry to the Sea-Air Operations Gallery (1976-2018).
