The Gemini Program's Apollo Landmark Project was designed to perfect an emergency procedure by which the planned Apollo mission astronauts could update the spacecraft guidance and navigation computers by inputting precise position information of preselected Earth landmarks. Booklets containing maps of candidate landmarks and related data charts were prepared and carried by Gemini and Apollo astronauts. This booklet was prepared for the Gemini VII mission, which had as an objective the photography from orbit of a number of the selected landmarks. The same booklet may have also been carried aboard Apollo 8.
The booklet was retained by the Manned Space Flight Center (later JSC) for public display as having been flown on Apollo 8. Ownership was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1977.
