Radio frequency mass spectrometer designed and built at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and typical of those flown on sounding rockets in the 1950s and 1960s for aeronomy and geocoronal studies. The stainless steel outer casing was removed to display the inner components. This presentation model, which is mounted on a wooden plaque, was given to Charles Y. Johnson by his colleagues at NRL on his retirement. Mr. Johnson donated it to NASM in 1996.
