Although possibly better known by its later luxury automobiles, Maybach Motorenbau G.m.b.H. of Friedrichshafen, German was originally the engine building subsidiary of the German Zeppelin Company (Luftschiffbau Zeppelin G.m.b.H.).

Built between 1909 and 1913 specifically for airships, this engine is believed to be a Maybach Model AZ. Engines like it powered airships built by Zeppelin, Schutte-Lanz, Parseval, and Gross. This engine was modified in the 1920s to adapt it to marine use.
