The Distinguished Flying Cross was established by Presidential order on January 28, 1927. The medal is awarded to United States Military personnel for heroism or extraordinary achievement during an aerial flight.

This medal was awarded to Lowell Smith for the first in-flight refueling flights in 1923 and the World Flight in 1924.
