This medal signified the induction of Dr. Charles Stark Draper into the Order of Washington, a hereditary society that includes members who, according to the language of the accompanying certificate, are lineally descended from "worthy Colonial ancestors who were loyal and faithful to American ideals as embodied in the principles of General George Washington." Dr. Draper, well known as an MIT professor and the "father of inertial guidance" became a member of this organization by invitation on August 1, 1972.
Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this medal, to the National Collection in 1974.
