This Apollo Service Module Mockup M-11 is a boilerplate structure representing a full size service module. An open bay represents the Apollo J-missions scientific instrument module configuration. A boilerplate mockup is a representation of a flight unit that has the same dimensions and mass properties. It does not, however, perform the functions of a flight unit because it is for testing purposes only. This particular mockup was used for transportation and handling studies and thermal tests. NASA transferred this service module mockup to the Smithsonian in 1984.
