This is the light shield and aperture door from the 1:5 scale model of the of the Hubble Space Telescope that was fabricated by the Lockheed Missile and Space Company, the contractor responsible for building the flight spacecraft. The model (Catlogue# 19830233000) depicts the exterior shell of the spacecraft, as well as the exterior assemblies required for its operation. Prominent features on the model include this aperture door and the two wing-like solar arrays which flank the main tubular assembly. This is one of three scale models of the HST in the NASM collection (see also Catalogue #s 19810041000 and 19830232000). The model was donated to NASM by the Lockheed Company in August 1983.
