The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) gave this Apollo 11 Command Module/Service Module/Launch Escape System model and plaque to Dr. Charles S. Draper in December 1969. Dr. Draper, then head of MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory and a long-time professor at the university, received the award for his extensive work on the guidance, navigation, and control systems for the Apollo spacecraft. Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this model, to the National Collection in 1974.
This object is on display in James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.
