This is a desktop model of the Soviet and Russian Soyuz TM ferry spacecraft that carried cosmonauts and later astronauts to the space stations Mir and ISS during the years 1986- 2002. The Soyuz TM resulted from modifications to previous models of the Soyuz, which had originally been conceived as a transported craft for a Soviet lunar mission in the 1960s. Subsequent modifications and adaptations of the craft have maintained it as the ferry craft of Soviet, Russian and now the International Space Station. The T and M in its name stand for "transport" and "modified," respectively. The current model of the Soyuz, the TMA-M, is currently the only means of transport to the ISS.
The origins of this model are unclear. The English-language inscription on the base might indicate that the model was manufactured for the western market. It was part of a collection donated to the museum.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
