This is a 1:48 scale model of the Atlas-Centaur rocket, used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to launch a variety of satellites and probes. The rocket uses a modified Atlas D intercontinental ballistic missile first stage and a Centaur second stage. It was first used to launch the Surveyor 1 lunar probe in May 1966, and the rocket has been used in over seventy launches since. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center made this plastic model with a wood stand and transferred it to the Museum in 1977.
