Among the items issued to astronauts are velcro-backed leather name tags that can be attached to flight suits and jackets. This name tag is a spare for German astronaut Dr. Ulf Merbold from the European Space Agency. He flew as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle in 1983 on the first Spacelab research mission and again in 1992 on the first International Microgravity Laboratory mission. In 1994 Merbold became the first European astronaut to fly aboard the Russian Mir space station.
NASA transferred a number of spare astronaut name tags to the Museum over the years, including this one in 2000.
