This vehicle permit pass allowed the bearer to park at the Vandenberg Air Force Base Space Launch Complex 6 (SLC-6). Although never used for the launch of a space shuttle orbiter, the launch complex at the Vandenberg Air Force Base (originally designed for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in the 1960s) was rebuilt in the late 1970s and early 1980s to provide NASA with an alternative launch site in addition to the primary site at the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Vehicle passes such as this allowed employees to access their intended area of work on the launch complex.

This pass belonged to Dennis Jenkins, a consulting aerospace engineer for the Space Shuttle Program, and author of Space Shuttle: The History of the National Space Transportation System, a definitive book detailing the development and first 100 flights of the space shuttle orbiters.

Jenkins donated the pass to the National Air and Space Museum in September 2011.
