Physical Description
From the accession file: A photocopy of the letter which Santos-Dumont sent me when I made my first cross-country flight Sao Paulo-Rio de Janeiro, reading as follows:
“Miss Anesia Pinheiro Machado.
My most sincere felicitations on your beautiful flight Sao Paulo-Rio, commemorating sportingly and audaciously the centennial of our Independence. I am also sending you a medal like one which I always carry with me.
With my sincere compliments. (signed) Santos-Dumont.”
This autograph shows his steady handwriting and the original manner in which he signed his name with a hyphen denoting his Brazilian-French ancestry.
