This engraved plaque was presented to Dr. Charles Stark Draper when he was the guest of honor at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Command in Illinois on November 21, 1975. Draper, the founder of the Instrumentation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was known as the "father of inertial guidance" for his pioneering work creating guidance systems using gyroscopes and accelerometers.

This is one of the many awards, trophies, medals and other recognitions that Dr. Charles Stark Draper donated to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in 1981.
