This is one of the first prototype spacesuits that International Latex Corporation submitted to NASA as part of the Apollo suit competition in 1962, just after the Apollo program had been approved. At ILC, this model was known as an SPD-143 model suit, for ILC's Special Products Division. At NASA the suit was part of the AX1-L series. This designation noted that it was for the Apollo program, an experimental suit, the first in a series and that ILC was the manufacturer. The suit is mostly uncovered because NASA and ILC were discussing joint and connector designs at the time. The boots are dissimilar. The engineers and technicians referred to this suit as a "Modified Training and Evaluation Suit."
NASA Manned Spacecraft Center transferred this suit to the Museum in 1970.
