This is a US Navy pilot's pressure suit. The USN and B. F. Goodrich Company developed the Mark series of pressure suits during the 1950s. There were three models of the final Mark IV suit. Model 3 went into production in 1958 as standard high altitude issue for US Navy squadrons. The Mark IV, Model 3 featured enhancements in fit and ease of wearing, as well as substantially improved pressurization control. NASA obtained this suit for review in preparation for the Mercury program and selected it, with modifications to be the basis of the Mercury spacesuit.
NASA transferred this suit to the Museum in 1972.
