This is a pressure suit that the B. F. Goodrich Company (BFG) constructed for John Glenn as he was preparing for his February 1962 Mercury flight. Due to the quick progress of the mercury program, NASA chose BFG to modify their existing U.S. Navy Mark IV pressure suits for use in the Mercury program. The tight-fitting and custom made suits had an aluminized outer layer for thermal vacuum protection and a restraint system.
NASA Manned Spacecraft Center transferred this suit to the Museum in 1968 after the end of the Mercury program.
