This probe is part of the test equipment kit from the backup Skylab orbital workshop that is displayed in the Museum. The air velocity meter probe (velometer probe) could be attached to a velometer (A19761814000), also in the kit, to measure airflow.
Skylab was a U.S. space station launched into low Earth orbit in May 1973. Three different three-man crews occupied the orbital laboratory until February 1974. Skylab was equipped with several tool kits and devices for in-flight maintenance tasks, as well as scientific instruments for a variety of research projects.
The three-drawer container of testing equipment, made by McDonnell Douglas, was transferred to the Smithsonian with the backup Skylab Orbital Workshop in December 1975.
