This is the Marc 166 motor that ejected the nosecone of the Trident II submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM). The nosecone ejected prior to the deployment of the Trident II's multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles (MIRVs), which would carry the nuclear warhead payloads to their targets.
The Trident II SLBM entered service about the U.S. Navy's Ohio-class fleet ballistic missile submarines in 1989, replacing the older Trident I.
