The Sample Scale was designed to weigh containers of rocks and soil during the lunar mission. It was important to know the weights so that pre-determined weight limits were not exceeded at lunar lift-off. This type of scale was used on Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17. This particular unit was used for training activities. It was transferred to the Smithsonian in May 1974.
