Documented sample bags were numbered bags with closures that allowed samples to be identified and kept separate from one another. These bags were grouped into dispensers which provided easy access for the astronauts. Although documented sample bags of several different configurations were used on the Apollo missions, two basic shapes described most bags, cup-shaped and flat rectangular. The cup-shaped bags came in sets of approximately 35 (used on the Apollo 12 and Apollo 14 missions) and 48 (used on the Apollo 17 mission).

This set of bags was not flown. It was transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian in 1974.
