Astronaut Shannon Lucid kept records in this notebook as she tended the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) during her six-month stay on the Russian space station Mir in 1996. The device was installed on Mir from 1994 to 1998 to measure the stability of the microgravity research environment. Crew members responsible for its operation and periodic maintenance recorded their activities in logbooks, noting such information as date and time of operation and type of activity. Typical tasks included turning the instrument on and off, starting/stopping data recording, changing disks and filters, positioning and calibrating the sensors, and trouble-shooting problems.

NASA transferred the SAMS equipment and this logbook to the Museum in 2000, after they were returned from Mir.
