During a typical Shuttle mission, crewmembers use sleeping bags that attach to the walls or lockers in the crew cabin. Each sleeping bag consists of a sleep restraint pallet (a fabric support pad), a zippered sleep restraint liner for cover and warmth, and a removable pillow with head restraint. The pallet includes restraint straps for the upper and lower body, as well as flexible cords on springs for attachment to the cabin structure. Restraint straps are necessary to keep a "weightless" person securely in place while asleep. In microgravity, crewmembers may sleep comfortably in either horizontal or vertical positions.
This pallet probably was used for training, not for flight, and then transferred by NASA to the Museum.
