This inflatable slide could be deployed from the side hatch of the Space Shuttle orbiter in an emergency upon landing or after landing at a remote site without the usual exit equipment available. It was needed because the crew hatch was about ten feet above the ground. If necessary, a shuttle crew would activate the slide by positioning its container on the frame of the open hatch, then pulling a lanyard to inflate the slide for a quick and safe exit.

NASA added crew escape equipment to all orbiters after the 1986 Challenger tragedy. This slide was removed from Discovery after its final mission (STS-133 in 2011) and delivered to the Museum in 2012 after the high-pressure inflation device was discharged for safety. The deflated slide is now in storage.
